Building a WordPress website can look simple from the outside.
Install WordPress. Choose a theme. Add some pages. Upload a logo. Publish.
But that’s not how I approach a professional website.
For me, a good WordPress website starts long before I open the WordPress dashboard. The most important part is understanding why the website is being built, who it is for, and what it needs to accomplish. As a designer and developer, I try to combine visual design, usability, performance, SEO, and business goals into one process.
Here’s how I approach a WordPress website project from the initial idea to the final launch.
1. Understanding the Business First
Before I think about colors, fonts, or layouts, I want to understand the business.
Every website has a different purpose. A restaurant website might want customers to make reservations. A service company might want to generate leads. An online store needs to sell products. A personal portfolio needs to demonstrate someone’s skills and experience.
So I start by asking questions such as:
- What does the business do?
- Who are the target customers?
- What makes the business different?
- What does the business want visitors to do?
- What information do customers need?
- What are the main goals of the website?
This step might seem basic, but it can completely change the direction of the project.
A website should be designed around the business and its audience, not simply around a visual trend.
